Designing a Sustainable Built Environment

The Royal Academy of Engineering has appointed Sandy Halliday, Principal of the Edinburgh based GAIA Research, as Visiting Professor (VP) of Engineering Design for Sustainable Development in the School of Architecture + Building Design at The University of Strathclyde. There is a strong tradition of interdisciplinary design at Strathclyde and Sandy is therefore able to work with both architects and engineers together. The appointment of a Visiting Professor is part of a wider initiative across the UK to enhance the sustainability competence of graduating engineers.
This web site is being developed to assist teachers and students working with built environment issues to incorporate sustainability into their designs. It is based on research experience and training material developed by GAIA Research for a wide range of professionals involved in the built environment.http://www.gaiagroup.orgshapeimage_2_link_0
Sustainability competence has become a requirement for progression to Chartered and Incorporated Engineering status and the Royal Academy of Engineering has supported this initiative with a number of Visiting Professorship appointments at universities across the UK. It is intended that the scheme generates web based teaching and learning resources that can be shared. There is also a requirement from the RIBA/ARB for architects to address sustainability as part of their progression through Part 1, 2 and 3. Engineers working with architects and architects working with engineers should find useful material here.Royal%20Academy%20of%20Engineering.htmlhttp://livepage.apple.com/shapeimage_3_link_0
